Thräenenkind -- King Apathy -- Album Review

They say perfection is unattainable. But, Thräenenkind , a post-black metal band from Munich, Germany comes pretty fucking close to the threshold. Conceived in 2007, Thräenenkind, which can be translated from German as “child of tears,” quickly got to work recording original material for a demo that was released in 2008. In 2010, the quartet released a split-album with fellow German band, Heretoir, and followed that up with their first full length album on Lifeforce Records entitled The Elk in 2013. Incorporating an atmospheric sound that radiates melancholia, Thräenenkind bring every bit of woe they could garner to bring us King Apathy, also released via Lifeforce Records.
King Apathy opens up with a somber, lugubrious string of notes that provides an example of the discouraging journey in which you are about to embark. Providing you with the bare necessities to keep you afloat as you grasp the concepts Thräenenkind touch upon lyrically. They deliver their message of justice with lyrical themes that confront the issues all of mankind faces socially & politically whilst addressing the declining state of the planet we all call home. Thräenenkind deliver an ambiance in King Apathy that inspires feelings of solitude and apathy (as the title may suggest) whilst fueling a relief from the sadness with their pounding drum work and punching, atmospheric, crusty guitar riffs. They don't release background noise. In other words, this is not an album to listen to if you intend on using it as a driving distraction or just some shit to listen to at work. King Apathy is an album you concentrate on if you want to enlighten yourself; a mixture of thoughtfulness and solemn majesty you place into your head as you attempt to figure out the inner workings of the world beyond your own mind. Thräenenkind work musically to move you into a space of memorization. A weapon of audible vigor that encourages you to travel from the narrow-minded ideals you were raised on and to look at the big picture of life. A motivating piece of art that cannot be replicated without the sheer emotion that has been used as a theoretical currency in the writing, recording and production of King Apathy. It is safe to say I have been ensnared by this album. Not just because I was trying to write this piece of it. But, because I feel Thräenenkind have the right idea for the world. Thräenenkind is comprised of: Matthias - guitars, bass, lyrics Nils - vocals & lyrics Flo & Max - guitars Emanuel - drums

King Apathy was released on May 13th, 2016 via Lifeforce Records. The album can be heard below. Click the cover art above to be taken to the band's Bandcamp page.
